- 3 Opal Apples, peeled, cored and chopped
- 1/3 cup brown sugar
- 3 tablespoons all purpose flour
- 2 teaspoons cinnamon
- 1/2 teaspoon ginger
- 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg
- Pinch salt
- 1 tablespoon lemon juice
- 2 tablespoons unsalted butter, cut into 6 equal pieces
- 2 packages store bought pie dough
- 1 egg
- 1 tablespoon water
- Turbinado sugar
- 6 (2 ounce) Mason Jars
Preheat oven to 400F degrees.
In a mixing bowl, combine the apples, brown sugar, flour, cinnamon, ginger, nutmeg, salt and lemon juice. Stir until the apples are evenly coated.
Place the mason jars into a casserole dish and fill each jar to the top with the apple filling and a piece of butter.
Cut out 6 (3 inch) rounds of the pie dough and place them over the filling. Tuck in the edges and crimp with your fingers. Make 2 vents in the center of each dough disc.
Whisk the egg and water together and brush the tops of the dough with the egg wash. Sprinkle with the turbinado sugar. Place the casserole dish in the oven and fill halfway with hot water.
Bake for 20-25 minutes until the crusts are golden brown. Cool for 10 minutes before removing them from the water bath. Serve warm or at room temperature.
